The Team Reps send out a lot of information via e-mail, so please be sure to check your e-mail daily!

Rules on Swim Caps, Suits, and Medical Tape

Swim Caps: Swimmers are not permitted to wear the cap of any team other than Canterbury Woods; NVSL caps are also permitted. This is a Northern Virginia Swimming League (NVSL) rule and swimmers will be asked to change caps in Clerk of Course or could be disqualified if they swim in a cap with another team's logo. We had several swimmers who wore caps that did not align with the NVSL policy at Time Trials -- the great thing about Time Trials is it helps us all get ready for the regular season! Please make sure your swimmer has a cap that meets NVSL requirements. CW Caps that were purchased with your registration will be available this week -- please see Georgia Saunders. If you need to purchase a CW cap, please order one through the team website store.

Swimsuits: NVSL adheres to the USA Swimming rules for swimsuits:

  • Swimmers can wear 1 swimsuit in 1 or 2 pieces; goggles; and no more than 2 swim caps at a time.
  • Men/boys: suit can't go below their knees or above their navel.
  • Women/girls: suit can't cover their neck or extend past their shoulders or extend past their knees; tie back suits are not permitted.
  • Suit exemptions include: verified religious beliefs, verified medical conditions, other reasons deemed appropriate by the Rules Official.
  • Additional exemption: swimmers may wear a single set of garments underneath his/her swimsuit for privacy and/or modesty purposes.
  • Tech Suits: Only FINA-approved tech suits may be worn in competition. No technical suit may be worn by a swimmer 12 years of age or younger.

Medical Tape: Any tape on the body is not permitted unless approved by the Referee (such approval is facilitated by the Team Reps -- come to us for any approval requests).

For all A Meets, we are required to strictly follow the NVSL and USA Swimming suit rules. If your swimmer would like a suit exemption, please notify the Team Reps by the Tuesday before the A Meet (we are required by NVSL to submit any suit exemption requests to the other team). As a note, we have never had an issue getting an exemption for swim shirts for modesty purposes as long as the shirt does not provide a significant competitive advantage.

For all B Meets, CWST supports an inclusive swimming environment for all our swimmers and we will work with the other B Meet team as needed for suit accommodations. If your swimmer would like a suit exemption or accommodation, please let the Team Reps know by the Wednesday before the B Meet so that we can communicate our team needs to the other team and gain consensus.

Safety and Insurance

Safety
Safety is of paramount importance. Observe all pool safety rules at both our pool and every other pool. The diving end of our pool is 3 feet deep and at other pools, typically 3 to 4 feet deep. It is very important to note that the baby pool is closed during the morning practices because we do not have a lifeguard on duty. The NVSL Liability and Medical Insurance (see below) covers registered swimmers and divers only at practices and meets. Swimmers who ride a bicycle to practice are required to wear a bike helmet.

Insurance
Since our pool insurance specifically excludes the practice for and conduct of athletic competition, the Swim Team carries Liability and Medical Insurance through NVSL, which covers practices and meets. Swimmers practicing with the team must be registered as a team member in order to be covered by this insurance. This insurance covers only what your personal medical insurance does not cover. It does not cover transportation to and from practices or meets and has other exclusions and limitations. If you have any questions or a potential claim, see the Team Representative.
