Canterbury Woods Swim Team

Summer is almost here and there is no better way for kids to spend their days than swimming with the C-Serpents! Whether you are newer to swimming or swim with a club team, if you are between the ages of 5 and 18 then there is a place for you on our team. C-Serpents is also a great way to connect with neighborhood kids - we have social activities, pep rallies at the pool, and a buddy program. Come fill your summer with friends, fun, and swimming!

The team season is May 27th through July 26th and includes practice options five days a week, Pep Rallies on Friday evenings, competitive “A” meets on Saturday mornings, and non-competitive “B” meets on Monday evenings. Practice will begin on Wednesday, May 28th (ages 11 & under will practice from 5-6 pm; ages 12 & up will practice from 6-7 pm). Beginning June 12th, morning practices begin (7:30-8:30 am for 12 & up; 8:30-9:30 am for 11 & under) and evening practices will also be available Tuesday through Thursday (5-6 pm). The Swim Team also includes a developmental group for our younger swimmers – Super Serpents (practices are from June 12th to the Lollipop Meet in mid-July and are held 9:30-10:15 am).

Head Coach: Coach Joe Schaefer is the Canterbury Woods Swim Team Head Coach!  Joe brings years of experience as an NVSL Coach, a Woodson High School Swim Team Coach, and personal experience as an NVSL, club, and collegiate swimmer.  Most importantly, Joe brings a love for NVSL being part of a great team.  Go C-Serpents!

More about Joe:

As the 2021 - 2023 Head Coach for a sister NVSL team, Joe coached a wide range of summer swimmers from those that were just developing their skills to those competing at All Star meets. In that time period, Joe led the team to win the 2022 Divisional Relay Carnival, supported 8 relay teams to swim at All Star Relays (with 3 teams finishing in the top ten), and supported swimmers in a total of 22 events at Individual All Stars (with 12 finishes in the top ten).

Growing up as a swimmer and Junior Coach for the Wakefield Chapel Wahoos (NVSL), Joe was a leader and an accomplished member of the team; including achieving first place finishes in All Star Relays and Individual All Stars. Joe holds a Masters Degree from West Virginia University where he was a collegiate athlete for the Division 1 swim team. At WVU, Joe specialized in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke and swam at the Big XII Conference Championship all four years. Joe is an elementary school teacher and a Woodson High School Swim & Dive Assistant Coach. As a former swimmer at Woodson, Joe was a Team Captain, member of the 2020 State Championship team, and a member of the 200 Medley Relay team that still holds the school record.

Assistant Head Coach: Coach Katie Bauernshub is returning to CW as the Assistant Head Coach for the 2025 season! Katie brings experience as an Assistant Head Coach for a Division 8 NVSL team, competitive swim experience (club, high school, and NVSL), and several years as a Junior Coach for the C-Serpents. As the Assistant Head Coach for a sister NVSL team, Katie led the team to an undefeated season, supported 4 relay teams to compete at All Star Relays (including 2 top ten finishes), and supported swimmers for 16 events at Individual All Stars (including multiple top ten finishes and 2 top five finishes). Katie is looking forward to returning to CW this summer and supporting all our C-Serpents and Super Serpents! Katie is completing her Sophomore year at Christopher Newport University where she is studying to earn her degree in Education and pursue a teaching career.

The team reps are always available to answer any questions. The coaches will also answer questions, but we ask that you wait to speak to them after all daily practices are over to allow them the full attention of the swimmers.
